Fun in the Sun!

Water Safety! Everyone loves to swim , especially in the hot summer. However, drowning is the 5th leading cause of death related to unintentional injury according to the State of Home Safety in America Report. Here are a few ways to keep you and your family safe this summer:
" Children require CONSTANT ADULT SUPERVISION near bodies of water
" Install 4 sided fencing with self locking and self closing gates at least 5 feet high around pools. Keep gates closed and latched.
" When hosting a pool party, recognize a specific adult to watch the area at all times
" Enroll non- swimmers in swim classes
" Never swim alone
" Learn life saving techniques including first aid and CPR
" Have emergency numbers and CPR instructions posted near pool
" Teach children that drains, grates and filters are OFF LIMITS
" Remove toys from pool when not in use
" If a child is missing, be sure to check the pool FIRST

" 80% of lifetime exposure to the sun occurs before the age 18!
" Children get 3 times more exposure to the sun than adults
" One blistering sunburn can double a child's lifetime risk for skin cancer
" There are more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer each year!

* use sunscreen year round * use SPF 30 for kids recommended by SSA
* avoid reflective surfaces * avoid mid day sun, especially between 10a-2pm
" reapply sunscreen often
