A Money Management Moment with BMF Investments, Inc.
Barry M. Ferguson, RFC

BMF Investments, Inc. is a fee-only money management firm. What does that mean? It means that we accept a fee based on assets held for our portfolio management services. We don't accept commissions. We don't get 'paid to trade'. Our clients are not subjected to transaction costs. We manage a wide array of investment products and we manage them all with a few simple ideas.

Absolute return - We believe opportunities present themselves in both bull and bear markets. We just need to identify the trend.

Defense wins - Championships in sports are almost always won by the team that plays the best defense. Investing is no different. Big losses hurt worse than big gains help. Down 50% and up 50% still leaves you down 25%. Down 10% and up 10% leaves you down only 1%. Investing is not necessarily about big gains. It is mostly about avoiding big losses if at all possible!

Fees rather than commissions - Transaction costs get your portfolio some attention for the purposes of the commission generated. Fees bring your portfolio into focus everyday.

Settling for Indexes - If you want to match the return of a market index, just buy the index. If you want something different from just index returns, you have to incorporate strategies that are 'outside of the box'. We don't even know the boxes exists!

Listening to the markets - The markets are always right. We do what they tell us to do. We we see plus signs in our portfolios, we are doing something right. When we see minus signs, we are doing something wrong. We do what the market tells us to do and we have enough perspective to know that we are ultimately dependent upon the market to push portfolios.
